The Newcastle Muscle Centre is part of the Institute of Human Genetics, a research organisation with an international reputation within Newcastle University.
It is a centre of excellence for diagnosis, management and research into inherited neuromuscular diseases. Professor Hanns Lochmüller joined the Muscle Centre in 2007 from Munich.
Together with Volker Straub, Hanns was responsible for setting up the German muscular dystrophy network, MD-NET, of which he was Coordinator (jointly with Volker Straub) until 2008.
Before moving to Newcastle University, Hanns held the post of Consultant and subsequently Professor of Neurology and Molecular Neurogenetics at Ludwig-Maximilians-University in Munich.
He has a long-standing interest in the molecular genetics of the inherited myopathies and neuromuscular junction disorders, and his research focuses on the further study of animal models of these disorders as a means to understanding their pathophysiology, as well as to develop the means to monitor disease progression and therapeutic interventions.
Hanns took over as scientific coordinator of EuroBioBank from Cecile Jaeger in 2005 and has been re-elected on an annual basis.
