The Newcastle Muscle Centre is part of the Institute of Human Genetics, a research organisation with an international reputation within Newcastle University.

It is a centre of excellence for diagnosis, management and research into inherited neuromuscular diseases. Professor Hanns Lochmüller joined the Muscle Centre in 2007 from Munich.

Together with Volker Straub, Hanns was responsible for setting up the German muscular dystrophy network, MD-NET, of which he was Coordinator (jointly with Volker Straub) until 2008.

Before moving to Newcastle University, Hanns held the post of Consultant and subsequently Professor of Neurology and Molecular Neurogenetics at Ludwig-Maximilians-University in Munich.

He has a long-standing interest in the molecular genetics of the inherited myopathies and neuromuscular junction disorders, and his research focuses on the further study of animal models of these disorders as a means to understanding their pathophysiology, as well as to develop the means to monitor disease progression and therapeutic interventions.

Hanns took over as scientific coordinator of EuroBioBank from Cecile Jaeger in 2005 and has been re-elected on an annual basis.

Fabrizia Bignami, PhD.

Dr. Fabrizia Bignami has been the Administrative Coordinator of EuroBioBank since its inception in 2001. She holds a PhD in Cellular and Developmental Biology from the University La Sapienza of Rome, Italy.

After a post-doctoral fellowship at the CNRS (Paris, France) in 2000, Dr Bignami joined the Scientific Department of the French Association against Myopathies (AFM-Téléthon), as Project Manager for cell therapies.

Since 2002, she has worked as Director of Therapeutic Development at EURORDIS (European Organisation for Rare Diseases), in charge of all activities relating to research and development of medicinal products for rare diseases in Europe, in particular the administrative coordination of the EuroBioBank network.

Anne-Mary Bodin, M.A.

Anne-Mary Bodin has been assistant to the EuroBioBank Network since 2004, when she joined EURORDIS, providing support for the everyday management of the network.

Her tasks also include implementing the objectives of WP04 of TREAT-NMD in which the EuroBioBank Network provides the biobanking structure.

Prior to this, she worked as an English translator at the French Association against Myopathies (AFM-Téléthon).
